Personality: When describing Corvus, one would compare him to a fox. He is rather dextrous and sly, and also quite the prankster in some situations. He learned most of this from his previous ways as a thief, and although he no longer steals food, he WILL attempt to steal other things he likes (such as collars, bones, etc.). Sometimes, he can be clever, but that's only under special circumstances.
Corvus is a nice guy, but he enjoys teasing other cats, which can sometimes make him come off as a bully. He likes getting a rise out of cats, but he means well, and will never push something far enough to hurt someone's feelings. If he does, then it's an accident. Usually if someone gets offended by one of his jokes, Corvus will apologize, but not without attitude as he grows a bit annoyed if HE annoys someone. Probably out of embarrassment, but it's not entirely known why.
Other than that, he's pretty laidback and accepting of all cats. He doesn't care if someone is good or evil--as long as they're nice, he'll be nice.
It's a given that Corvus can be lazy sometimes. After a long day of hunting, eating, or even socializing too much, he just needs a break to rest. He takes lots of naps, but can never get a full rest due to his insomnia. Sometimes this is an advantage; if danger is near, he is easily awakened and can escape. But his insomnia is also a bad thing, seeing as lack of sleep can due more harm than good when it comes to the senses.
History: Corvus was born in Foxcroft long after the destruction took place. The ruins and rubble and feral animals were all he knew. He was apart of his mother’s second litter, a small litter of three kittens, and had an older brother from a previous litter, whom he looked up to. He never knew who his father was. Even so, it wasn’t long enough for his world to come crumbling down.
At only three months old, he witnessed his mother and littermates being attacked and most notably eaten by a feral dog.
One may think, how did little Corvus survive? His older brother, named Tayo, helped him, of course. Corvus was lucky enough to be out exploring with Tayo when the violence started. Thankfully, the dog was too busy finishing off their mother and siblings to notice Tayo and Corvus fleeing the area. Corvus was sad for the longest time, but Tayo always told him, “Crying is for the weak. You’re not weak, are you? If you are, you’re gonna die out here, and I’m not gonna help you.”
After Tayo told him this, Corvus has trained himself to be strong… at least, mentally. Tayo never taught him how to hunt, only to steal, so the two brothers were a duo of thieves, occasionally getting into fights with their victims… and losing, since they were so scrawny. When Corvus was about 6 months old, Tayo left him to starve, running off with a group of other cats in the woods to start a gang far away from the village.
Corvus remembers his exact words, “Sorry ratbrain, you’re too weak. So skinny. Probably gonna die soon, anyway, and we don’t need you weighing us down.”
However, Corvus wasn’t exactly sad that his brother was so cruel to abandon him like that. He was just irritated. He wanted to run with the gang, plus he couldn’t steal food from others without his brother’s help. Not to say that he wouldn’t try, however.
A few days after Corvus’s brother left him, he stalked a large tom hunting a rat. After he had caught the rat, Corvus managed to distract him and steal his kill, but was quickly caught. The older tom fought over the rat fiercely, even giving Corvus a treat in the process. He scratched his cheek, drawing blood immediately, but to his surprise, an older female came to see what all the commotion was about and helped him. He even got his rat snack, too.
That cat was a she-cat named Anju, and the two then became their own duo. Technically, she adopted him, but he never really referred to her as “mother.” Ever since the two came to be, Anju taught him that being a thief was only going to get you a bad reputation and sometimes even killed. She taught him all she knew about hunting, and he has bettered himself. (at least with his eating habits, anyway)
But Anju was an old cat, older than the destruction; she was there when the village was ravaged by the tornado, still grieving her humans and brother, whom abandoned her after she got separated from them. This was the one time Corvus felt pity for someone other than himself. When she died, he felt lost and even cried. She was the mother he never grew up to have.
About a month after Anju died, Corvus came across a cat around his age, a bit younger than him; her name, Roka. Corvus was curious at first, noting her small size (but mostly the fact that he knew she was not from here at all). Even when Roka moved past and kept telling him to leave her alone, he would follow her and stop her in her tracks, subtly not wanting her to leave. All until she attempted to lash out, of course.
“I wouldn’t piss me off if I were you. I’m from the strongest gang waaaay in the forest back there. Fighting me is a death sentence,” Roka warned, her eyes piercing into Corvus’s very soul.
But Corvus was not fazed. In fact, he was more interested at this point, “Really? You’re not talking about the Republic, are you?”
Roka was taken aback, “How do you know?”
“You probably know my brother, Tayo. He’s an asshole.”
“Do a lot of the cats here know about the gang?” Roka questioned.
Corvus simply shrugged, “I don’t think so. Tayo only knows about it because of his dad, and our mother is from the forest, and all forest cats know about the gang, so it kinda just ties in together,” he rambled on, “also, if you’re from the Republic, what are you doing all the way out here? Are they moving camp or something?”
Roka snickered, “No way. The forest is their shield. They’d be nothing without it,” she paused, “I actually got chased out. They made me serve them as a kitten and now I guess I’m not good enough anymore. Oh well.”
The tom across from her blinked in confusion, wondering if he should pity her or not. But Roka simply shrugged and changed the subject, “I’m Roka. What’s your name?”
“Corvus,” he replied.
“Corvus? Like the crow? Your mother name you that?”
“Yeah, right before she was torn to pieces by a coyote along with my littermates,” Corvus replied in a morbidly casual manner, considering the contents of his statement. After their little conversation, the two eventually decided that two was better than one, and take care of each other. They’re best friends just trying to make it through the ruined village by making their lives easier and just getting into trouble.
