Personality: Ruby is a calm and reserved cat. Suffering much strife through her life, she has been hardened, yet prepared for anything. After losing everyone she has ever loved, she is wary to open up to people. At this point, her whole world is the small kitten named Ebon. Without her, her heart would be long lost.
History: Barely days old, Ruby was dumped with her siblings and mother in a crate in the middle of a field. Her mother rarely spoke of the humans who abandoned them, but Ruby grew up knowing it was a sore subject for her. She gained her sight in that crate and explored the dense field for months as she grew with her brothers and sisters. Her mother did her best to hunt for her litter, but growing up as a house cat, her hunting skills were subpar. Their meals often only included grasshoppers. Because of lack of nutrition, two of Ruby’s siblings didn’t survive kittenhood.
That fall of Ruby’s first year, their home was quickly destroyed by a great metal beast that tore up the grass and everything in it. During the chaos of their home being destroyed and fleeing the great beast, Ruby lost her family. She wondered the first day or so hoping desperately to catch her mother’s scent. But she the dust that was kicked up by the beast made it too difficult to pick up her scent. For a weeks she was hauled up in a patch of brush surrounded by the now barren fields. She ate only grubs and worms that crawled up from the soil after the the grass was stripped from the soil. When she was lucky she’d find a surviving field mouse wandering the wasteland.
The night of the first snow, it was clear that Ruby’s family was gone, and she decided to move on. In the distance she could see hills covered with trees. There she knew she could find food and shelter. The long trek took her a few days, but when she reached the trees she was not disappointed. There was a large variety of prey in the area, and the trees and thick brush provided great protection from the harsh winter wind. Hunting for herself was hard at first, but she picked up on it quickly. After exploring the trees for a few months, she found a nice hallow to stay through the rough parts of winter.
The winter months became hard, for a short while, Ruby began to question if she would be able to make it. Then, Ruby had her first encounter with another cat outside her own litter. He was a slender tom, much unlike Ruby’s mother and her siblings. His sleek black body intrigued Ruby and he was equally intrigued by her. This tom’s name was Orin, and helped Ruby survive the winter.
With her new partner, Ruby welcomed the spring with her first heat cycle. The little tabby and the tom bed together the first time. And Ruby was incredibly happy with the new life she was beginning with this black cat. But that was soon all ended when humans entered their little patch of forest. They came all at once with loud sticks that toppled trees left and right and ferocious dogs that attacked any animals they came across. Once again alarmed by her home being destroyed, Ruby’s trauma re-awoke. Ruby and Orin fled the trees. During their escape, they were met by one of the angry, snapping dogs that accompanied the humans. Orin commanded that Ruby flee while he stayed behind to hold the monster off.
Reluctantly, Ruby fled. She ran the entire day, and once night fell, she huddled herself underneath the root of a tree, panting mostly from exhausted but partially from the residual panick. Desperately waiting for her Orin to return to her. But he never did. She waited that night and all the next day. But there was no sign of him.
For the rest of spring, she wandered. Feeling the loss of her family once again, she felt hopeless. She feared bringing these kittens into this world on her own. When summer arrived, she birthed three beautiful little kittens. The first was black like her father. And the last two were grey tabby. She fought hard to keep the kittens alive. The first to pass was only days after her birth. The next was picked up by an owl while Ruby was trying to hunt. The last one, jet black like her father, Ruby was determined to keep alive.
With summer drawing to a close, Ruby feels the chilled winds of winter returning. It is only a matter of time, before snow blankets the ground once again. Ruby can’t help but feel a sense of panic to find a home for her little family before then.
