History: Ember was born in a litter of three to a stray female that lived near a grocery store that wasn't on the island. He was the only kitten that was strong enough to survive. Employees at the grocery store used poisoned food to kill his mother, but he was rescued from being poisoned by a sympathetic employee. She took him to her home on the island and fed him and loved him. Then her daughter was revealed to be allergic to cats, so she put him outside. She kept feeding him, but from then on he became an outside cat, just like his mother had been.
He stayed near her house during his youth, but as he got older he felt the need to wander and explore. He ended up discovering a couple of other humans who were kind to him and also fed him. Each household called him by a different name and fed him different food. He enjoyed the variety. Despite his many names, he preferred the first name he had been given, which was Ember.
When he'd first started wandering around, he met an older cat. His name was Samson and he saved Ember from being run over by a car. He was very gruff and usually grumpy, and never willingly affectionate, but he showed Ember the ways of the outdoor cat. He taught him to hunt and scavenge for food, to avoid cars and dogs, and how to determine which humans were friendly and which would kick him. Samson was his only friend for a while, until he started straying farther and farther from his first family's home. He met many other cats, some friendly and some decidedly not.
When the tornado happened, he was so terrified he didn't know what to do. He was far from his first home, but Samson helped him find a place to hide. They huddled in a cement drainage tunnel under the road for what seemed like days, but probably wasn't. Once the wind died down, Samson said he would go out and see how it looked and maybe find them some food. Ember waited for hours, but he never came back. He waited and waited until his hunger grew too great to bear and then he cautiously ventured out. Samson was nowhere to be found.
His first home had been crushed by the trees that surrounded it. He didn't know what had happened to the humans inside. The homes of his other humans were empty, or similarly crushed. He hung out in the neighborhood for days, out of a sense of familiarity, and also with the vain hope that Samson would show up again.
Samson never showed up, however, so Ember eventually left his old neighborhood, tired of the painful memories. He's been wandering around ever since, driven to different places by hunger and a need for companionship, but always with an eye out for Samson.
