A Familiar Place for a Lonely Soul [Dallie]

“Who are you?” A voice called out from within the building, blue eyes piercing through the darkness of a corner, “My father warned me about ghosts, how they are here to steal away cats. I’m telling you right now that I won’t go without a fight!” The voice was clearly feminine and smooth even though the owner of the voice tried to make it rough and menacing. Floorboards creaked as Ducky shifted her weight anxiously, taking in the sight of her first ever ghost, they were breathtaking and also spent shivers of dread down her spine.

What if this was one of her siblings?! No... they seemed older than that, but maybe... they knew her mom and siblings. Ever so slowly, she crept forward into the dim cold light that filtered in the building, eyes trained on the ghost. It had been just her for most of the winter, making the longing to be by her father’s side even stronger. But... maybe if she captured this ghost... or even killed it somehow, she could show her dad how tough she was!! Not to mention how brave she would be and maybe she could use it as leverage to convince her dad that they should travel together! “State your name and... and your business here!” She growled.

 Her dark fur bristled up, revealing more of the white undercoat underneath as she shrank back in fear, pupils wide in the dim building as she did her best to find a way to stand up to this ghost. He had been here before? With the species that had made this place? He must be an ancient spirit then! What if he didn’t know what happened? She licked her teeth as she shifted her body back into a pounce position before replying to her terrifying guest, “Are you talking about those who used to live here? They have been gone for... well, for forever. I don’t think even my dad encountered them when he was young. They up and left most, the rest died... at least that is the tale my dad told me.” Her tail flicked nervously behind her on the floor as she saw his claws. A horrible thought crept into her mind, ‘What if he can attack me but I can’t attack him?’

 Ducky had to make this ghost understand or soon her dad would be alone in this world... and she couldn’t let that happen! “Listen, no one has lived here for a long time and so I took up residence here as no one else was using it. I don’t know who you are talking about but take a whiff, there is no smell of humans any longer here.” Her eyes darted between him and the way out, wondering if she should make an escape before he could have the chance to lash out.

Slowly, she relaxed as she saw the ghost become desperate for answers, they seemed scared almost, “Well... probably for 100 moons, maybe more! My father told me it was a bad wind storm that drove them out and those who stayed were killed. I think you have been dead for moons, do ghosts not know time passes wherever they go after life?” She asked curiously. She still wasn’t relaxed completely, her muscles still tense and her claws sheathing and unsheathing anxiously as her tail swiped across the floor deftly. Would her dad even believe her story about this encounter with a real ghost? Her hair puffed slightly with excitement as she thought of recounting this whole experience with him and how brave she was! Well, if she makes it out alive that is.

 “Listen, ghost, it’s obvious it’s been a while since you have been here on the earth. How about you take a look around the rest of the ruins? See it all with your eyes and see how long it has been. Humans aren’t coming back anytime soon, they haven’t even tried since the wind storm, I believe,” she hummed, her ears flicking a bit before she moved to sit up, her tail neatly wrapping itself over her paws as her blue eyes stared into the adult cat’s with curiosity. She remained quiet for a short while, searching his eyes intensely before nodding, “Tell me your story and maybe I can help you... if you can help me, that is. I won’t ask for much, but you might be my only way to talk to my mom and my siblings and it might comfort my father to hear from them from wherever they have gone.”
